Running the Boston Marathon at age 72

Goals. We have them, accomplish them, and set new goals. I knew after running my first marathon at age 47 that I loved it and wanted to do more. I trained with a fun bunch of people and we always looked forward to our early Saturday morning runs. Let’s do New York, Chicago, Marine Corps! The options were endless and we so enjoyed them.

COVID-19 set back my goal to run my last marathon at age 70, so last month I completed my 45th marathon and my 20th Boston Marathon. It was one of my most memorable because I was well prepared but there was no pressure to finish at a certain time, or qualify to run it again next year. I could see friends on the course and do more than just wave and take the time to enjoy myself. Spectators at Boston are the best and it was fun to interact a bit, smile!

When I was in my 50’s, my running friends were impressed with my 3:40 time. Now that I’m 72, my non-running friends are impressed that can run for over 5 hours!

Time for new goals! What are some of yours? Let’s discuss it next September at the 55th Reunion!

  1. Totally impressed, JJ. All those hours over the years of hard work and accomplishment. You’ve gone further than most of us even dream of, and rarely a boarding pass (or a mask) needed. Congrats on your journey, a very special one!

Now, are you sure you’re done? …. if Michael Jordan and Muhammed Ali can come back …. just saying ???

  2. I’m impressed as well. I’m very active in many things but was never a runner. You’re not done yet, keep going. I for one will root for you.
